CIDDA
- The Cast Iron Drainage Development Authority is responsible
for the representation and promotion of the major manufacturers
of cast iron soil and drainage systems. CIDDA has also gained
CPD recognition and is affiliated to the British Foundry Authority
(BFA).
-
Based in Birmingham
the organisation's primary concern is to inform architects
and other agents responsible for the specification of drainage
systems about the significant benefits of modern cast iron
systems for above and below ground applications. This vastly
improved product is now lighter and much easier to install
than its predecessors, yet still retains the superior strength
and durability which has always been a positive feature of
cast iron.
-
CIDDA's long-term
aim is to reposition cast iron as the industry's preferred
choice over alternatives such as clay and plastic in many
types of construction work both above and below ground.
-
Currently cast iron
drainage systems account for a growing percentage of the materials
specified in new buildings. With a resurgence of favourable
opinion, CIDDA is looking to strengthen its appeal further
and increase its market share.

- As the independent representatives
of the industry, CIDDA regularly commission new research from
experts in the field and publish new information on developments
in cast iron. They are also responsible for organising a number
of debates each year to discuss the properties of cast iron.
- CIDDA's function is to promote
the many advantages of cast iron drainage systems which include:
- A proven record of providing efficient
trouble free service in excess of 100 years in all types of
structures throughout the world, which in many instances means
the systems last the lifetime of the building.
-
An inherent strength which protects against vandalism and accidental damage.
- Non-flammable properties which
make it one of the safest options in cases of fire, as cast
iron does not emit dangerous or toxic smoke or gases and eradicates
the need for fire collars.
- Enviable environmentally friendly
characteristics being 100% recyclable.
- Cost benefits with less bedding
support needed, no additional fire or noise reduction measures
to be specified and minimal maintenance required.
- Simple installation using easy
to assemble mechanical couplings.
- Nationwide availability through
established builders merchants.
- New cast iron drainage systems
are designed to meet the new European product standard BS EN
877 published in December 1999.
