Cast Iron delivers in-store quality

The quality of cast iron has made it the material of choice for above and below drainage systems in a new flagship store in Canterbury. The store, Fenwicks in St Georges Street, has been built as part of the redevelopment of Canterbury city centre.

Famed for its store in New Bond Street, London, Fenwicks is the UK’s leading independent department store group with 8 outlets around the UK. The group has had a store in Canterbury since 1987 but replanning of the city centre necessitated the building of completely new premises, adjacent to the existing site.

Consultants Waterman Gore were responsible for all mechanical and electrical services to the building and it was Principal Public Health Engineer Mike Loft who specified cast iron for the project. He says: “We specified cast iron drainage systems because in general we feel that cast iron is a superior product. In fact, on any major project – such as a hospital or airport, for example – we would automatically choose cast iron because it offers a quality that matches the overall standards of the development. It is durable, robust and less vulnerable to damage and we also find the general standards of installation to be of a better quality than is achieved with alternative materials.”

The Canterbury store, designed by Fitzroy Robinson and Partners and built by Skanska Construction UK, occupies five floors, including a basement. All of the below ground drainage and above ground soil, waste and rainwater systems are cast iron. Mike Rawlings of the Cast Iron Drainage Development Authority endorses the view that cast iron is the most appropriate material for a project of this type by saying: “In an owner-occupied building, both the quality and longevity of the building services are important. Cast iron offers ‘fit and forget’ peace of mind and will last the life expectancy of the building.”
